HP smart tank 530 - Printing with Amazon Alexa

This document is for HP web-connected printers, the Amazon Alexa app, and Alexa-supported devices, such as an Echo or Fire Tablet.
Enable the HP Printer skill from the Amazon Alexa app on your mobile device or computer to ask any Alexa-supported device to print your custom lists, shopping and to-do lists, and pre-formatted documents, such as puzzles, calendars, checklists, comics, and coloring pages.
NOTE:
Attention HP Instant Ink customers: Do not order cartridges through Amazon or Alexa. HP Instant Ink automatically sends cartridges when your printer tells HP you need more.
Amazon supplies replacement emails may arrive before your cartridges are depleted. You do not need to replace cartridges until you are prompted by an HP printer message.

Step 1: Enable the HP Printer skill

Enable the HP Printer skill and add a printer from your HP account.

I have an HP account

Enable the HP Printer skill from your mobile device or computer.
  1. Install the Amazon Alexa app on your mobile device or sign in to your Amazon account on your computer.
    • Android devices: Go to Amazon Alexa (in English) to get the App from the Google Play store.
    • Apple iOS devices: Go to Amazon Alexa (in English) to get the App from the App Store.
    • Amazon Fire devices: The Amazon Alexa app should be preinstalled on your device. If the app is not installed, your Kindle device is not supported. Enable the HP Printer skill from a different mobile device or on your computer.
    • Computers: Go to Amazon (in English), and then sign in to your account.
  2. Open Alexa Skills.
    • Android, iOS, and Amazon Fire devices: On the Amazon Alexa app home screen, tap the Menu icon, and then tap Skills & Games.
    • Computers: On the Amazon home screen, open the drop-down menu next to the search bar, select Alexa Skills, and then press Enter.
  3. Search for HP, and then click HP Printer from the skills list.
  4. Click Enable to Use.
  5. On the Skills Permissions screen, click Save Permissions to allow the HP Printer access to your Alexa lists.
  6. Select the I agree with check box, and then click HP Account.
  7. Follow the prompts to sign in with your HP account credentials.
  8. Select the printer you want to use, and then click Connect.
    Your printer is now ready to print with the Amazon Alexa device.

I do not have an HP account

Create an HP account, add your printer, and then enable the HP Printer skill.

Step 1: Get the printer code

Connect your printer to the web, and then get the printer code.
Printers with a touchscreen or text-based display
Connect your printer to the web, and then get the printer code.
  1. Turn on the printer, load plain paper in the input tray, and make sure ink or toner cartridges are installed.
  2. Turn on Web Services:
    • Touchscreen displays: On the printer, touch or press the HP ePrint button or icon . Tap Setup, and then follow the on-screen instructions to turn on Web Services.
    • Text-based displays: On the printer, navigate to Web Services Setup, Network Setup, or Wireless Settings, and then follow the on-screen instructions to turn on Web Services.
    If Web Services are enabled already, tap Print or Print Info.
The info page prints with the printer code listed. Continue to the next step.
Printers without a touchscreen or text-based display
Connect your printer to the web, and then get the printer code.
Android devices
Use the HP Smart app to turn on Web Services, and then get the printer code.
  1. Make sure your Android device and printer are connected to the same wireless network.
  2. Go to 123.hp.com to install HP Smart on your phone or tablet.
  3. On the app home screen, tap the printer icon or the plus sign  .
  4. On the My Printer screen in the HP Smart app, tap Advanced Settings.
  5. Tap Web Services, and then confirm that Web Services is enabled.
    • If Web Services is enabled: The Summary option displays in the Web Services section. Tap Print Info Page, and then continue with these steps.
    • If Web Services is not enabled: The Setup option displays in the Web Services section. Tap Setup, follow the on-screen instructions to enable Web Services, and then continue with these steps. An info page prints.
The info page prints with the printer code listed. Continue to the next step.
Apple iOS devices
Use the HP Smart app to turn on Web Services, and then get the printer code.
  1. Make sure your Apple iOS device is connected to the same wireless network that your current printer is connected to, or that you want to connect a new printer to.
  2. Go to 123.hp.com to install HP Smart on your phone or tablet.
  3. On the app home screen, tap the printer icon or the plus sign  .
  4. Tap Web Services, and then confirm Web Services is enabled.
    • If Web Services is enabled: Return to the Web Services screen, tap Print Info Page, and then continue with these steps.
    • If Web Services is not enabled: Tap Continue, follow the on-screen instructions to turn on Web Services, and then continue with these steps. An info page prints.
The info page prints with the printer code listed. Continue to the next step.
Computer or Chromebook
Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to get the printer code.
  1. From your printer, print a Network Configuration or self-test page.
    For instructions on printing a Network Configuration or self-test page, search HP Customer Support for your printer model and "print a configuration page" or "print a self-test page."
  2. Find the printer IP address on the Network Configuration or self-test page.
  3. On your computer, open an Internet browser.
  4. Type the printer IP address in the browser address bar, and then press Enter.
    NOTE:
    Make sure to type the IP address into the browser's address box. If typed into a toolbar or search engine, the Embedded Web Server (EWS) does not open.
  5. If a website security certificate displays in the Internet browser, click Continue.
    The EWS information page for the printer opens, confirming the printer is on the same network as the computer.
  6. On the EWS webpage, click the Web Services tab.
    • If a Web Services tab is not available, your printer does not support HP ePrint.
    • If a Web Services Setup page displays, click Continue, Turn On, or Enable, and then follow the on-screen instructions.
    • If a Web Services Summary page displays, Web Services is already enabled.
      Click Print Info Page under Web Services Settings, and then continue to the next step.
The info page prints with the printer code listed. Continue to the next step.

Step 2: Set up an HP account and add your printer

Create an HP account on the HP Smart website (formerly HP Connected), and then add your printer using the printer code.
  1. On your computer or mobile device, go to the HP Smart website.
  2. Click Create Account, and the follow the prompts to set up a new account.
  3. On the HP Smart home page, type the printer code, and then click Add.
    If your printer does not display on your HP Smart homepage, click Add a Printer, type the printer code, and then click Add.

Step 3: Enable the HP Printer skill

Enable the HP Printer skill from your mobile device or computer.
  1. Install the Amazon Alexa app on your mobile device or sign in to your Amazon account on your computer.
    • Android devices: Go to Amazon Alexa (in English) to get the App from the Google Play store.
    • Apple iOS devices: Go to Amazon Alexa (in English) to get the App from the App Store.
    • Amazon Fire devices: The Amazon Alexa app should be preinstalled on your device. If the app is not installed, your Kindle device is not supported. Enable the HP Printer skill from a different mobile device or on your computer.
    • Computers: Go to Amazon (in English), and then sign in to your account.
  2. Open Alexa Skills.
    • Android, iOS, and Amazon Fire devices: On the Amazon Alexa app home screen, tap the Menu icon , and then tap Skills & Games.
    • Computers: On the Amazon home screen, open the drop-down menu next to the search bar, select Alexa Skills, and then press Enter.
  3. Search for HP, and then click HP Printer from the skills list.
  4. Click Enable to Use.
  5. On the Skills Permissions screen, click Save Permissions to allow the HP Printer access to your Alexa lists.
  6. Select the I agree with check box, and then click HP Account.
  7. Log into your HP account, and then click Next.
  8. Select the printer you want to use, and then click Connect.
    Your printer is now ready to print with the Amazon Alexa device.

Step 2: Print with an Amazon Alexa device

Print with your Alexa device using the HP Printer skill or a different Alexa skill using Skill Connections. The printer must be turned on and in a ready or standby state to accept print requests.

Print using the HP Printer skill

Print content using the HP Printer skill.
Say, "Alexa, ask my printer to print a Help page"
A one-page summary prints, including an up-to-date list of content, voice commands, and other helpful information available on your Amazon Alexa device. You can print content like custom lists, shopping lists, checklists, activities, puzzles, and games.
NOTE:
The HP Printer skill does not support printing documents or photos from your mobile device, computer, or online accounts. To learn about additional mobile printing options, go to Mobile Printing Solutions Compatible with HP Printers.

What are the requirements to print with Alexa?

To print with Alexa, confirm that your computer, mobile device, and printer meet the following requirements.
NOTE:
Currently, only English and French are supported.
  • The Alexa device is set up and connected to your local network.
  • An English or French language Amazon account set up for:
    • English-language account: Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, United Kingdom, or the United States.
    • French-language account: Canada.
  • An HP account with your printer added through the HP Smart website (formerly HP Connected). For more information, go to Setting Up an Account on the HP Smart Website.
  • The printer is connected to your local network, either wirelessly or with an Ethernet cable. The HP Printer skill does not work with USB-connected printers.
  • You have a computer or one of the following supported mobile devices. For the most up-to-date list of devices that support Amazon Alexa, go to Alexa Help (in English).
    • Android device running OS 4.0 or later
    • Apple iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch running iOS 7 or later
    • Fire tablet or phone running Fire OS 2.0 or later
  • Your printer supports HP ePrint and Web Services. Look for an HP ePrint button or icon  or a Web Services icon  on the printer. For text-based menu displays, select the Setup, Settings, Wireless Settings, or Network Setup to confirm it has a Web Services menu.

How do I get help using the HP Printer skill?

For help using the HP Printer skill, say, "Alexa, ask my printer for help," and then follow the verbal prompts.

What if the content does not print?

After asking Alexa to print content, the print job does not print. Make sure your printer can print normally from a computer or mobile device before performing these steps.
If you need help reconnecting your printer to your wireless network, go to No Connection after Router or Wi-Fi Settings Change.
NOTE:
United States only: If you are unable to print content from another skill, confirm the content prints correctly using the HP Printer skill, and then contact the provider of that skill for additional support.
  1. Say, "Alexa, ask my printer to print a Help page" to make sure the service is working correctly.
    • If the page prints, review the available content and supported voice commands, and then try to print the content again.
    • If the page does not print, continue troubleshooting.
  2. Open the Alexa app, tap the app Menu icon , and then select Activity.
  3. Find the card for any recent HP Printer Skill request, and then locate the printer model on the card.
  4. Confirm that the printer model on the card matches the printer model you are using.
    • If the printer models match, wait a few hours, and then try printing again. If the issue persists, contact HP Customer Support.

How do I fix an invalid printer?

If Alexa tells you that your printer is invalid, make sure the printer model matches the printer shown in the Alexa app.
  1. Open the Alexa app, tap the Menu icon , and then select Activity.
  2. Find the card for a recent voice-print request. If you don’t have a card from the HP Printer Skill, say “Alexa, ask my printer to print a Help page,” and then find the card for that request.
  3. Confirm that the printer model on the card matches your printer.
    • If the printer models match, wait a few hours, and then try printing again. If the issue persists, contact HP Customer Support.

How do I ask Alexa to start a Shortcut?

Tell Alexa to ask your printer to scan a document or start a Shortcut that you named previously.
Examples:
  • Say "Alexa, ask my printer to start my Shortcut named Scan to Drive."
  • Say "Alexa, ask my printer to scan to my Shortcut named Contracts."
NOTE:
Voice-activated scan, copy and Shortcuts not available on all printers.

What if I need help resolving a problem with my printer?

Use the HP Smart app from your Android or iOS mobile device to identify and resolve common printer errors.
  1. Go to 123.hp.com from a browser on your phone or tablet and install the HP Smart app.
  2. Open the app, and then follow the on-screen instructions to add your printer.
  3. Tap the printer icon on the HP Smart app home screen, and then look under Printer Status for help with any issues with the printer.

What if I receive an 'Unable to link your Skill' message?

Wait a few minutes, and then try to enable the HP Printer skill again. Make sure the printer is connected to a wireless or wired (Ethernet) network with an active Internet connection, Web Services is turned on, the printer is connected to the same network as your mobile device or computer, and the printer email address is correct.

How do I disable the HP Printer skill?

You can disable the HP Printer skill using your mobile device or computer.
  1. Open the Amazon Alexa app or Amazon website.
    • Mobile devices: Open the Amazon Alexa app, tap the Menu icon , tap Skills and Games, and then select Your Skills.
    • Computers: Go to Amazon (in English), and then sign in to your Amazon account, if necessary. In the search bar, click the drop-down menu, select Alexa Skills from the list, and then press Enter. On the Alexa Skills menu bar, click Your Skills.
  2. In the list of your skills, click HP Printer, and then click Disable Skill.
    The HP Printer skill no longer displays in your skills list.

Can I connect multiple printers to an Amazon Alexa device?

No, you cannot connect more than one printer to your Amazon Alexa device.

How do I connect a different printer?

To connect a different printer, disable and re-enable the HP Printer Skill in Amazon Alexa.
  1. Make sure the printer you want to connect to is added to your HP account on the HP Smart website (formerly HP Connected).
    For more information on adding a printer, go to Setting Up an Account on the HP Smart Website.
  2. Open the Amazon Alexa app or Amazon website.
    • Mobile devices: Open the Amazon Alexa app, tap the Menu icon , tap Skills and Games, and then select Your Skills.
    • Computers: Go to Amazon (in English), and then sign in to your Amazon account, if necessary. In the search bar, click the drop-down menu, select Alexa Skills from the list, and then press Enter. On the Alexa Skills menu bar, click Your Skills.
  3. In the list of your skills, click HP Printer, and then click Disable Skill.
    The HP Printer skill no longer displays in your skills list.
  4. Click Enable to Use to re-enable the HP Printer Skill, and then select the printer you want to use.
    The printer is added to the HP Printer Skill and is now ready to use with Amazon Alexa.
